Lunchtime at Rutabegorz: Sunshine, Salads, and Summertime

Ever since Casey came into my life, essentially everything revolves around the little man. Since he’s little, it’s hard to leave him unsupervised at home for a long period of time, so I try to schedule things to the best of my abilities. I haven’t been able to eat out too much lately (which I’m sure my wallet is happy about), but it changed when I found out that Rutabegorz in Orange is dog-friendly! The only other restaurant that Casey had been with us to before was Lazy Dog, and besides barking at one dog, he was an absolute angel. We’re trying really hard to train Casey to behave himself with other humans and dogs, and socializing him at a young age seems to be putting us on the right track.

I decided to meet J for lunch at Ruta’s, and of course Casey was invited! I’ve been to other Ruta’s, but never to the Orange location. It’s located right across from Chapman University, but since we had visited at noon before school was back in session, it was quiet.

We had the patio to ourselves for most of lunch, and it was perfect for people watching. I loved the relaxed atmosphere; in fact, it was next to a handicraft store that I’ll have to stop by next time. I don’t spend nearly enough time in local cafes, so it was a great change of pace.

It was an absolute perfect day to sit outside, soak up some sun, and catch up with J, all with Casey by our sides. It was going to be a long day, so I ordered an iced vanilla latte to start out with. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, so I’d probably try something else on the menu the next time around.

Ruta’s definitely has one of the biggest menus I’ve ever seen; everything from salads to wraps to sandwiches to soups. There are a ton of vegetarian options, which make it a solid option that will make everyone happy. I’ve heard people complain about the menu being too big, but I consider extra choices to be a good thing!

Ruta’s always has a great deal for an appetizer for a dollar or less; I’ve had various types of hummus, spreads, and chutneys that I normally wouldn’t have ordered if it wasn’t for the obscenely great price. This months’ was a chiptole dip with chips. It was creamy with just the right amount of kick. I wish they’d jar these monthly specials up to take home!

The great thing about Ruta’s is that the food comes out quick. Probably quicker than any restaurant I’ve ever been to, actually. Our waitress was really sweet and even gave in to Casey’s pleading for a ear scratch. I mean, how could you not love this face though?

I ordered the garlic chicken salad, which has been my go-to meal for a year. It has garlic chicken, tomatoes, walnuts, avocado, cucumber, crunchy wonton sticks, and a side of balsamic vinaigrette.  In case you haven’t heard, Ruta’s salads are huge! They’re definitely share-worthy, I always order the full size so that I can take the extras home for dinner.

J ordered the chicken enchiladas. I know I said I order the same thing every time, but if I had to order something else off the extensive menu, it’d be the enchiladas. They come smothered in cheese, which, in case you didn’t know, is one of my favorite foods. It’s his go-to meal, and I’m lucky he let’s me snag a few bites here and there. He ended up pouring the remaining chipotle sauce on the enchiladas, which took it to the next level. So. Good.

We were both stuffed by the end of lunch. Casey was very well-behaved, which means he can certainly join us next time around! I forgot to ask if they had any food items for dogs on the menu (Lazy Dog brings out chicken and rice for about $5), but I’ll have to ask next time. It wouldn’t be fair for Casey to miss out on the great food at Ruta’s again, now would it? Oh, and I couldn’t leave you without one more good picture of this babe…We can’t wait to go back!

SleekHair OC Beauty Inspo

“Gorgeous hair is the best revenge.” – Ivanka Trump

I had the pleasure of attending SleekHair‘s OC Beauty Inspo in November. Not only did I meet a wide variety of talented Orange County bloggers and gorgeous fashionistas, I also was introduced to several wonderful hair care, makeup, beauty, and fashion companies. I’ve always loved supporting local businesses (Small Business Saturday, anyone?), so having this wide array of talent in what was virtually my backyard was quite a treat. The entire event was well-coordinated from the open wine bar (helllloo!) to the food trucks to the free stylish tattoos. All attendees who RSVP’d received a gift bag filled to the brim with the hottest hair care products, make up samples, and skin care remedies. I was thrilled to try so many different products from some fantastic companies. I love that more companies are including more health-conscious items; it makes a world of difference when you use wholesome products that aren’t harmful on your body or the environment.

Here’s a review of my favorite VIP swag bag items. Be sure to check out my full review & other great resources at SleekHair’s Tumblr account.

KMS California Makeover Spray: Two different KMS California sprays were included in my bag, so I was keen on seeing the difference. The makeover spray absorbs oil, while giving volume. It works best on dry hair, so I used it before going out at night. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciated the fact that my hair didn’t get chunky! I love light, crisp hair spray.

KMS Playable Texture: The KMS Playable Texture spray quickly became a valuable part of my night time regime. As a nighttime bather, I go to bed with my hair wet. I love my beachy waves/curls, so I try not to use anything that straightens my hair. I sprayed the texture onto my wet hair, and was off to bed. I woke up with beachy hair that looked like I had just taken a trip down to Newport! It was light, airy, and smelled heavenly. It can also be used on dry hair, so needless to say, I’ll be busting this out for my next updo.

Manna Sheer Glo: I thought this gorgeous tube was lip balm at first! Luckily I read the label and realized it was shine lotion. I’ve found that many eye shadows are too chunky on me, so I use this on top of my eyelid all the way to the bottom of my eyebrow line. It gives the perfect, light shine that matched my skin incredibly well. I can’t go a day without this beauty.

Xtend Keratin Magic Potion: I’ve used the Xtend Keratin Magic Potion before on the ends of my hair and loved it! It was thin, so I didn’t have to worry about clumps.  My hair felt healthier, shinier, and smoother. I recommend using it on slightly damp hair and massaging it into your roots and the end of your hair.

China Glaze in Orange Knockout: I went through essentially every shade of orange and pink this summer, and Orange Knockout was one of my favorites. I was so excited when I got my own bottle to take home.  It’s a little too bright for winter months, but it’d be fun to pair with a metallic gold or silver on the index finger, which reminds me of pumpkin pie. I can’t wait to bust this color out in spring, especially because China Glaze is such good quality.

Toji Pure Density Hair Nutrition tablets: I haven’t had a chance to try these tablets out as I don’t want to mix supplements, but these are jam-packed with tons of goodies like Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin B6.  There are more than 34 ingredients in it that aim to help make your hair longer, stronger, and thicker. I struggle with split ends, so I can’t wait to give this a try.

Evolv H: Ultra Shine Moisture Conditioner: This was one of my favorite products from the day! Not only is it gluten free, but it’s vegan as well. The packaging says “less is more”, but I’ll be honest: I took that warning lightly as I have thick, long hair. I wanted to keep my curls together and free from morning frizz, so I washed with just cold water, de-tangled the knots, and applied the conditioner only. I woke up without frizz and tangles, plus my hair was so soft. I can’t recommend this one enough!

Snow…in Orange County?!

Who would’ve thought Orange County would have snow? And just a couple miles from the beach, too?! The nearest snow spot is more than an hour away and involves driving through mountains, which is frightening to the inexperienced, a.k.a. me. I’ve only seen it snowing once in my life during a trip to London in 2009 and snow on the ground once or twice. Needless to say, I’m no snow expert!

I woke up New Years Eve not expecting to do much during the day, but when I heard the extremely cold weather had brought snow just thirty minutes from my house, I had no choice but to pack up the Jeep, throw on my Hunter boots, and head to Trabuco Canyon.

What should have been a thirty minute drive ended up being an hour due to the bumper-to-bumper traffic through the neighborhoods in Trabuco. Clearly everyone was heading to the mountains to experience snow! However, seeing everyone’s excitement was worth it. Nothing says California like playing in the snow on a boogie board, right?

I don’t know how long it will be until Orange County has snow again, so we sure soaked it up!
