Outfit of the Night: Fifty Shades of Green

I threw together this outfit for a birthday dinner last night and was in love with the pop of colors up top, subdued by my neutral boots and bag. The blouse has easily become one of my favorites; it’s flowy, bright, and super versatile. I could pair it with black pants and nude heels for a fancier outfit, too! Wanna know what the best part of the outfit was? My boots hid my ankle brace. Style and stability, friends!

Packing with a Purpose: Carry-On Essentials

Carry On Essentials

After years and years of traveling, I’ve mastered the art of packing the perfect carry-on cosmetic essentials. It’s not easy packing up everything you need, but it is possible. Here’s what I packed on my trip to South Africa:

-Toothbrush & toothpaste: Let’s start out with the most self-explanatory one, shall we…?
-Revlon eyeliner & mascara: I’m not a huge makeup person, but I can’t go without my Color Stay eyeliner. It lasts a long time and is easy to apply. Flying wears me out, so putting on mascara helps me look a little bit more alert and awake.
Owl Be Sweatin’ headbands: These suckers are non-slip, adjustable, and comfortable. I chose two bold prints to take with me to help spice up my outfits. Plus they keep your hair out of your face while you sleep. You can buy your own online. Don’t forget to use discount code “underthesticks15” to get 15% off!
-Blow Pro Faux Dry Dry Shampoo via SleekHair: This powder is perfect for absorbing oils and giving bounce to your hair. It keeps my curls intact without having to use water and gel shampoo.
-Wet Ones: You never know when you’ll need hand wipes. From airport bathrooms to messy airplane meals, I can’t stress how important it is to pack wet wipes! Be sure to check before using them on your face, as some wipes can only be used on hands.
-Deodorant- Seriously, do you want to be the person who’s sweating and smelling during a twelve hour airplane ride? Didn’t think so.
-Gum: My gum of choice has always been Orbit. I chew gum during takeoffs, landings, and whenever I need to give my mouth a minty flavor.
-Contact solution & extra contacts: I used to lose contacts while sleeping all the time. Bringing extra contacts is so important because you never know when you’ll accidentally cut one, drop it in the dirty sink, or get too much debris in it. Bring contact solution so you can soak your contacts while you rest your eyes. Traveling is hard on your eyes, so be sure to take as much time without contacts as possible.
-Yu-Bu cream via SleekHair: This tiny tube packs quite a punch. I use it on dry spots and rough skin. Just a tiny bit will do!
-Lip Balm: It’s especially important to stay hydrated while traveling. I try and steer away from soda and juice while up in the air (besides ginger ale, because, well, that’s been my thing since I was little) and drink as much water as possible. A key sign in dehydration is chapped lips. Keep drinking your water and protect your lips with a strong lip balm.

Some extra tips…

-Pack as if these are the only cosmetics you have. You never know what will happen to your check-in bag, so all vital medicine, contact solution, sacred night cream, etc should be kept in your carry-on. I lost my bag and all I had was my carry-on essentials. I don’t know what I would’ve done without my contact solution especially!
-Three. Fluid. Ounces. Don’t forget it. I’ve seen too many expensive lotions, hairsprays, and perfumes taken away by TSA. If you need to buy small labeled containers to help you, do it. It’s not worth getting your favorite items confiscated.
-Wrap liquids in a zip-loc bag. No one wants hair gel all over their toothbrush.
-Don’t forget feminine products. Your cycle may be thrown off when you travel, so be prepared for everything. Also, keep in mind that some countries don’t have all feminine products, such as tampons, available, so do your research.
-If your medicine is time-sensitive, have a watch in your carry-on that is set to “home time” to ensure you’re taking them at the proper time each day.
-Don’t over-pack. Sometimes it’s easier to buy your items at your final destination in smaller quantities, so that you can save room in your carry-on bag for other goodies like books and snacks.

SleekHair OC Beauty Inspo

“Gorgeous hair is the best revenge.” – Ivanka Trump

I had the pleasure of attending SleekHair‘s OC Beauty Inspo in November. Not only did I meet a wide variety of talented Orange County bloggers and gorgeous fashionistas, I also was introduced to several wonderful hair care, makeup, beauty, and fashion companies. I’ve always loved supporting local businesses (Small Business Saturday, anyone?), so having this wide array of talent in what was virtually my backyard was quite a treat. The entire event was well-coordinated from the open wine bar (helllloo!) to the food trucks to the free stylish tattoos. All attendees who RSVP’d received a gift bag filled to the brim with the hottest hair care products, make up samples, and skin care remedies. I was thrilled to try so many different products from some fantastic companies. I love that more companies are including more health-conscious items; it makes a world of difference when you use wholesome products that aren’t harmful on your body or the environment.

Here’s a review of my favorite VIP swag bag items. Be sure to check out my full review & other great resources at SleekHair’s Tumblr account.

KMS California Makeover Spray: Two different KMS California sprays were included in my bag, so I was keen on seeing the difference. The makeover spray absorbs oil, while giving volume. It works best on dry hair, so I used it before going out at night. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciated the fact that my hair didn’t get chunky! I love light, crisp hair spray.

KMS Playable Texture: The KMS Playable Texture spray quickly became a valuable part of my night time regime. As a nighttime bather, I go to bed with my hair wet. I love my beachy waves/curls, so I try not to use anything that straightens my hair. I sprayed the texture onto my wet hair, and was off to bed. I woke up with beachy hair that looked like I had just taken a trip down to Newport! It was light, airy, and smelled heavenly. It can also be used on dry hair, so needless to say, I’ll be busting this out for my next updo.

Manna Sheer Glo: I thought this gorgeous tube was lip balm at first! Luckily I read the label and realized it was shine lotion. I’ve found that many eye shadows are too chunky on me, so I use this on top of my eyelid all the way to the bottom of my eyebrow line. It gives the perfect, light shine that matched my skin incredibly well. I can’t go a day without this beauty.

Xtend Keratin Magic Potion: I’ve used the Xtend Keratin Magic Potion before on the ends of my hair and loved it! It was thin, so I didn’t have to worry about clumps.  My hair felt healthier, shinier, and smoother. I recommend using it on slightly damp hair and massaging it into your roots and the end of your hair.

China Glaze in Orange Knockout: I went through essentially every shade of orange and pink this summer, and Orange Knockout was one of my favorites. I was so excited when I got my own bottle to take home.  It’s a little too bright for winter months, but it’d be fun to pair with a metallic gold or silver on the index finger, which reminds me of pumpkin pie. I can’t wait to bust this color out in spring, especially because China Glaze is such good quality.

Toji Pure Density Hair Nutrition tablets: I haven’t had a chance to try these tablets out as I don’t want to mix supplements, but these are jam-packed with tons of goodies like Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin B6.  There are more than 34 ingredients in it that aim to help make your hair longer, stronger, and thicker. I struggle with split ends, so I can’t wait to give this a try.

Evolv H: Ultra Shine Moisture Conditioner: This was one of my favorite products from the day! Not only is it gluten free, but it’s vegan as well. The packaging says “less is more”, but I’ll be honest: I took that warning lightly as I have thick, long hair. I wanted to keep my curls together and free from morning frizz, so I washed with just cold water, de-tangled the knots, and applied the conditioner only. I woke up without frizz and tangles, plus my hair was so soft. I can’t recommend this one enough!

Back to School Essentials

back-to-school www.UnderTheSticks.Net

If you’re anything like me, “Back to School” is one of the best times of the year! What’s better than brand new pens, notebooks, and agendas? Now that I’ve graduated from college, I don’t exactly get the adrenaline rush of school supply shopping. But, I’m able to transfer that energy over to shopping around for new hair and beauty products that will keep me shiny and healthy all year. I partnered with the wonderful team at SleekHair to not only review some incredible products, but to also give my readers a chance to win a prize pack!

Pure NV BKT Humidity Defense Spray ($4.99)Five Stars UnderTheSticks.Net
It’s been unbelievably hot here in California the past couple weeks. While the rest of the country is getting ready for fall, we’re still basking in the bright, hot sun of summer. It’s vital to take care of your hair in the humidity and prevent it from being damaged. The humidity spray smelled incredible and stopped my hair from frizzing. It didn’t enhance curls, but made my hair feel smooth; I felt like I just came from the beach! I highly recommend a few spritz across your hair before you step out in the heat.

Simply Smooth Xtend Keratin Repairative Magic Potion ($4.99)Four Stars UnderTheSticks.Net
The magic potion is a great multi-functional product! My hair is long, thick, and marches to its own beat. I’ve had my fair share of frizzy hair, fly away strands, and unfortunately, split ends. I could tell right away that my hair looked much healthier at the tips, which is always a good sign.

100% Pure Lavender SeaFoam Facial Cleanser ($19)Four Stars UnderTheSticks.Net
I was taught the importance of cleaning your face thoroughly at a very young age. No matter how tired you are, it’s important to take your makeup off to make sure you don’t cause skin irritations, acne, or rashes. It’s equally important to make sure that the products you’re scrubbing your face with are pure and natural. Harmful chemicals can really irk your skin, so be sure to pay attention to the ingredients list. I loved that the ingredients were vegan, gluten free, and all natural. I docked a ranking off as it didn’t have any instructions on how to use it. I wasn’t sure whether to use it like normal cleanser, let it sit and harden for a bit, or wash it off right away.

100% Pure Lip & Cheek Tint in SugarPlum ($17)Four Stars UnderTheSticks.Net

I’ve never been much of a lipstick wearer, and tend to gravitate towards lip balm and chap stick to give me the small pop of color or shine my face needs. I loved Sugarplum’s color because it wasn’t too overwhelming; its pinkish-purple hue was subtle, but complimented my darker skin very well. It didn’t last as long as I wanted to, so I took away one point. It was easy to hold, apply, and can be thrown in my purse or makeup bag for on-the-go touch ups!

Macadamia Natural Oil Refining Curl Cream ($15.89):Five Stars UnderTheSticks.Net
I used to despise my curls when I was in junior high and high school. I’d straighten my hair every day and throw it up in a ponytail. Not only was it a waste of energy, but it was so harmful to my hair! I rarely straighten my hair now, and have truly come to embrace my beachy waves/curls. My hair quality/curly factor really depends on the day, but sometimes I really need my curls enhanced. The Macadamia Oil smelled divine. The first day I wore it, I had four separate people tell me it smelled great! I massaged it into my damp hair after a shower and I woke up with pretty curls that didn’t have flyaways or any frizz.
